The Business of Passports

A passport is more than just a document to prove your identity when travelling abroad, it's also a measure of your country's diplomatic relations and a tool for global mobility. The most powerful passports in the world offer visa-free travel to the greatest number of countries, making it easier for their holders to conduct business, study, or travel.

The power of a passport is measured by the number of visa-free countries its able to get access to, i.e. the number of countries a passportholder can get into upon arrival, without the need to apply for a visa. Passports with less countries on their visa-free list of destinations are considered weak.

The Henley & Partners Passport Index is currently the global authority of ranking passports based on the singular visa-free access critierion, and as of January 2023, Japan for a 5th consecutive time holds the title of strongest passport, with Singapore and South Korea both tying in second.

THE US PASSPORT BANKING ADVANTAGE

Many offshore banks view US passport holders as low-risk, as the American financial system is very robust with strict regulations on personal and business laws. This adds a layer of confidence on US clientèle for offshore banking service providers, in a way that few other nations can provide.

Due to the numerous credit facilities an individual, group or business have in the US, many offshore banks target US clients specifically with specialised banking products. Their mindset is that US High-Net-Worth clients are one of the least likely to default, as there are so many credit loan, credit financing, portfolio- and mortgage-backed lending opportunities for US citizens.

THE SWISS CHEESE ADVANTAGE In 2021, the Swiss passport scored 190 out of 227 on the Henley Passport Index, a testament to Switzerland's strong diplomatic ties and global reputation.

Funnily though, the Swiss passport from a business standpoint, can achieve more than the Japanese passport. This is because the sole criterion that rating agencies such as Henley & Partners Global use is visa-free access, not ease of doing business.

In offshore banking, Swiss passports are so powerful because they provide access to the country's banking system, one of the reasons why they are so powerful. In the event of economic instability or political turmoil in one's home country, this system is known for its stability and security, making it an attractive option.

Furthermore, Swiss banks provide wealth management services, asset protection services, and tax planning services. Those with high net worth are particularly interested in these services because they want to minimize their tax liabilities while maximizing their investment returns.

DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT POWER

Diplomatic US passports are issued to individuals who are employed by or affiliated with the US government and are traveling abroad for official business. It's literally one of the sexiest perks of working for the CIA, FBI, or "Secret Service".

Having a diplomatic passport can also provide access to exclusive events and venues, such as diplomatic receptions and embassies. This can be particularly beneficial for high-octane business professionals looking to network and make connections in other countries.

A passport is a powerful document that opens doors to the world, and some passports offer greater benefits and power than others. While the Japanese passport is currently the most powerful, the US Diplomat passport is a symbol of immense power and privilege, providing the holders with diplomatic immunity, visa-free travel, and other privileges.
